Castlemaine is the ideal daytrip or overnight destination. Rich in history, artistic endeavours, festivals, contemporary food and natural beauty, Castlemaine has it all.

Surrounded by rolling hills and a natural beauty that is hard to beat, you can choose the experience to suit your mood. With quality restaurants and many cool cafes you will find stunning seasonal produce, organic meats, cheeses, award winning wines, boutique beers and local ciders – the perfect gastronomic experience set against a backdrop of distinctive goldfields architecture!

In the heart of town you can find on-trend and designer fashion, quirky vintage pieces, galleries overflowing with original art, bookstores galore, an abundance of antiques and collectables and many other boutique shopping experiences.

Be amazed at converted historical spaces like the old Woollen Mill which is now a vibrant space bursting with food producers, artisans, a brewery, cheesemaker, winemakers and more. While at The Mill don’t miss Das Kaffeehaus where you can taste locally roasted coffee in an Austrian-styled setting that has to be seen to be believed.

Down the road from Castlemaine is the fertile valley of Harcourt which offers something for everyone. From craft cider and boutique wines to the adrenalin rush of world-class mountain biking on Mount Alexander.

What Locals Love About Castlemaine

Hannes McNamara

I enjoy visiting the botanical gardens, especially by bike, then usually popping into The Mill precinct for a treat at Ice Cream Social. I also love walking through the treasures at the Salvage Yard, imagining the potential for reuse of the various odds and ends.
