The jewel-named Sapphire Coast is one of coastal New South Wales’ true wonders. Often regarded as the wilderness coast. This is a place of clean and welcoming beaches, rugged sea cliffs and lush, dense forests.

Equidistant between Sydney and Melbourne gives you a sense you are remote – it’s just one of the reasons you should journey here. The region stretches between Bermagui and Eden and is delightfully uncrowded.

Fill your days with active adventures on mountain bike trails. Walk hiking trails where the forest runs wild and the water runs clear. Pick up a paddle and kayak the gentle waterways. Find an uncrowded beach and relax or surf the perfect break.

Whale watching

Between September and November you’re in the right spot for some of the finest whale watching in Australia.

Whale watching and goldfields

Delve deeper into the region’s history. The old whaling town of Eden sits proudly on the ‘Humpback Highway’. You’ll hear tales of how the local Yuin people hunted with wild killer whales. Check out the Bega Pioneer Museum and the Montreal Goldfield.

Be Inspired

  • Famed for its oysters, which grow in the pristine estuaries you can taste to your hearts content in the local eating places or head for an ‘oyster farm gate’.
  • With an ever-changing world of culture and heritage at your fingertips dive into the colourful world of local artists, galleries, and studios.
  • Tee-off on one of the five golf courses all within a one-hour drive of Merimbula.
  • Explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, a sanctuary for koala’s and swamp wallabies to name just two of the native wildlife that makes its home here.
  • Food lovers should head to the Bermagui Farmers Market and Bega for its world-famous cheese.
  • Spend time in Ben Boyd National Park, home to a rich indigenous history along with beautiful coastal panoramas.
  • Kick back on one of the beautiful beaches. You’ll find crystal clear waters, squeaky soft sand and is highly likely that you’ll spot more dolphins than people.

What Locals Love About the Sapphire Coast Region

Glenn scaled

I’ve been here for 39 years because of the lifestyle. The natural beauty, the forests, the national parks along the coast, fishing, surfing….Also it’s a temperate climate, not too hot or cold and not to humid. I’m also only 2 hours from the ski, we’ve got everything!

Glenn Brunette

Anthony scaled

We’re not too inundated with people so you can often go to a beach and you’ll be the only person there, even in the middle of summer! You’re not too far to anything and you can certainly experience a lot of things in one day.

Anthony Daly

Clair scaled

I think we’ve got some of the most magical coastlines in the world, and the diversity too! You can have beautiful hinterland, country side, clean scenic beaches, fresh local produce all within one area.
