The Sale Common Wetland, 2kms from Sale on the South Gippsland Highway, covers 300 hectares and is 70 per cent freshwater marsh, with the remainder of the area made up of red gum woodland and grasslands. From the car park, a short walking track leads through woodlands and grasslands past the information shelter to a lookout; a longer walk (7.2km, 2.4 hours return) along Flooding Creek Track, passes through Red Gum woodlands with extensive views of the morass.
A key feature of the Sale Common is the extensive boardwalk that enables visitors to observe the wetland at a closer level. The boardwalk winds its way through a variety of habitats, starting from the edge of the swamp, through deeper water, past islands and through a small reed bed.
1) Walk the extensive boardwalk through a variety of habitats.
2) Spot Kookaburras, Superb Fairy-Wrens, cormorants, pelicans and brushtail and ringtail possums.
3) Take a walk along Flooding Creek Track and observe the changing habitats.
