Plan your road trip experience between Melbourne and Sydney

Melbourne to Sydney Hume Highway

Driving the Hume Freeway/Highway

The Hume freeway (or highway) is the quickest route between Melbourne and Sydney, albeit the main arterial and trade road between the two major cities and not the most exciting for the modern day holiday roadtripper.

If you must travel Highway 1, then we have a few tips for you.

  1. The journey is around 850 kilometres. Check your tyres, water, oil and all the stuff you never think of when commuting around on short journeys;
  2. Do a bit of planning - if you've only got a couple of days you'll want to think about where you're staying overnight. Albury and Canberra are popular stopovers but there's lots of other little interesting places;
  3. Stop along the way and enjoy the sites, nature and activities;

5 Things to see along the Hume

There are five things you must do if you plan to take the shortest route between Sydney and Melbourne.

1. Ned Kelly's Glenrowan

Two hundred kilometres north of Melbourne is Glenrowan, the scene of Australia's most famous showdown between the bushranger, Ned Kelly (and his gang) and the police, in 1880.

2. Murray River at Albury / Wodonga

At the border between Victoria and New South Wales is the sister towns of Wodonga (Victoria) and Albury (NSW). Here is where the mighty Murray River flows.

3. Holbrook Submarine

Just north of Albury, on the highway toward Sydney, is Holbrook, an inland town with the unique distinction of having a submarine.

4. Dog on the Tuckerbox, Gundagai

Halfway between Albury and Canberra is Gundagai where, just out of town, a famous statue from yesterday of a simple dog on tuckerbox has stood. The Dog on the Tuckerbox is an Australian historical monument and tourist attraction at Snake Gully, five miles from Gundagai, New South Wales. It was made famous in the song of the same name, but it is in fact located about 7.2 kilometres (4.5 mi) from the centre of Gundagai. The statue has stood since 1932 as a tribute to pioneers.

5. Canberra, The Nation's Capital

Canberra is Australia's Capital. You could spend a week or more here (which we recommend) but if you only have a day or a few hours here are our recommendations:
